Licenses

There are three categories of sport fishing licenses: salmon fishing, fishing for species other than salmon and burbot fishing. The license indicates the date, hour and minute issued and must be signed by the individual who sold it and by the license holder. When sport fishing, you must have your fishing license with you, and be prepared to present it, on request, to a wildlife protection officer or assistant. In the event the license is lost, stolen, or altered beyond use, another license must be purchased to continue fishing.

Exemptions

The spouse of the holder of a license for species other than salmon or of a license for burbot as well as their children under 18 years of age are entitled to fish without a license.
Children under 18 may fish without a license provided they are supervised by the holder of a fishing license or his/her spouse, aged 18 and older. The total number of fish caught and kept each day must not exceed the quantity to which the license holder is entitled.Note: These measures apply to residents and to Non-residents.

Salmon Fishing

Before fishing in salmon rivers, consult the brochure entitled "Salmon Sportfishing 2001" which describes the fishing conditions applying to salmon rivers. In a salmon river, a person must hold an Atlantic salmon sport fishing license to fish for any species during the salmon fishing season. Outside the salmon fishing season, the holder of a fishing license for species other than salmon can fish for these species in the parts of certain salmon rivers (consult "Salmon Sportfishing 2001")

Non Residents

Non-residents must hold a Québec sport fishing license to fish anywhere in Québec.

Purchasing a License

Licenses to fish for species other than salmon are sold by authorized license distributors, usually sport goods stores, hardware or convenience stores. These licenses are also sold by certain outfitters as well as certain wildlife reserves. However, this license is not required when fishing in a park managed by Parks Canada or in a fish pond. The spouse and children of a non-resident may fish without a license in some cases.

Alberta Sportfishing Licenses

You are required to purchase an Alberta Sportfishing license to fish in Alberta if you are over 16 years of age. Anglers under 16 years of age, 65 years or older, or a member of the Indian people are not required to purchase a sportfishing license but must follow all sportfishing regulations.

WIN Cards:
As of March 16, 1998 recreational fishing licenses and hunting licenses in Alberta are sold through private license issuers using a point of sale machine. Anglers and hunters must have a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card before purchasing and license or Wildlife Certificate under this new system. The WIN card is valid for five years. Anglers and hunters that have a valid WIN card can use it as a swipe card to purchase their yearly licensee.

If you already have a WIN card, the license will print your name address, phone number, date of birth, height, weight and alternate identification information that was provided at the time of your WIN card purchase. Any change of information should be noted on the WIN application forms available at any license issuer.

If you do not have a WIN card, you will be required to fill out a WIN application form at the license issuer. A temporary WIN receipt with a 10-digit number will be issued to you and you may then purchase a sportfishing license. Your personal plastic WIN swipe card will be mailed to you within five weeks.

If you lose your Alberta Sportfishing license a reprint can be acquired form any license issuer for a nominal fee.

If your WIN card is lost or stolen you should report it as soon as possible by calling 1-888-944-5494. This will prevent the card from being used by another person. You can then purchase a new WIN card with a new WIN number. When you purchase your new replacement WIN card please call the toll free number above to ensure that your angling/hunting history is properly transferred to your new number

Sport fishing licenses may be purchased at private outlets throughout the province including sporting goods stores, Canadian Tire, and Mohawk gas stations.

Your Alberta Sports fishing License must be carried on your person at all times while angling in Alberta or when transporting wild fish. If you are caught fishing without a valid license you may be subject to fines.

Ontario Resident: An Ontario Resident is defined as a person whose primary residence is in Ontario and who has lived in Ontario for a period of at least six consecutive months during the 12 months immediately before applying for a licence.

Canadian Resident: A Canadian resident is defined as a person whose primary residence is in any part of Canada other than Ontario and who has lived in Canada other than Ontario for a period of at least six consecutive months during the 12 months immediately before applying for a licence.

A complete and vaild licence to fish consists o fan Outdoors Card plus a vaild fishing licence tag or a Temporary Fishing Licence and Outdoors Card Application. The Outdoor Card is a plastic, walletsized identification card to which your Ontario or Canadian fishing licence tag is affixed. It acts as a durable carrier for your licence tag. The Outdoors Card is valid for three calendar years.

How can you buy an Ontario Fishing License?

Most Canadian residents need an Outdoors Card to fish in Ontario (between 18-65 years of age)
If you have never had an Outdoors Card, you can request an application form be mailed to you by phoning the Outdoors Card Centre at 1-800-387-7011 call centre (anywhere from Canada). The Outdoors card is good for 3 years.

If you are a Canadian resident between 18 and 65 years of age and you want to fish in Ontario right away, you can buy a a "Resident Fishing Licence and Outdoors Card Application" from one of more than 2,000 licence issuers across the province. A temporary paper licence is effective immediately and valid until December 31 of the year in which it was purchased. The fee for a temporary paper licence includes the cost of a three-year Outdoors Card.
